About the Ceremony

On Saturday, March 29, 2008, the Coalition of LGBTA Graduate Students in conjunction with the LGBTA Student Resource Center will host a Pride Commitment Ceremony at 1:00 p.m. in Alumni Hall (HUB) as an event to kick-off Pride Week 2008 at the Pennsylvania State University.  The event will celebrate the loving relationships of several same-sex couples as each couple is united in love and devotion, in the presence of their friends, family, and the Penn State and State College communities.

The Mayor of State College, Bill Welch, has enthusiastically agreed to preside over the service.  As same-sex marriage and civil unions are not legal in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, legal rights may not be conferred to the couples through the Commitment Ceremony.  Thus the service symbolizes the love and devotion between the individuals involved, as well as the hope that future generations will be able to benefit from the legal rights traditionally conferred with legal marriage and civil unions.

The March 29th event is open to all students, staff, faculty, and community members, with a public reception following the ceremony.  Formal attire is not required; however, appropriate and respectful attire would be appreciated.
